lunch break

“I like to prowl ordinary places

and taste the people-

from a distance.”

― Charles Bukowski

“you need to get the booger sucker”,

one dad says

to another dad to be

he smiles subtly,

and jots it down

on his phone app

pigeons kiss

and proceed to lovemaking,

for 5 seconds

disheveled,

the male pigeon flies away

as if confused

he comes back, a moment later,

and they stagger side by side

soaking up the sunshine

and thinking about babies,

i presume

“last song of the day,

then i have to go to my day job

as a dishwasher,

but i won’t give up on my passion

i promise”

alan says to the microphone

from the corner of the square,

under his hat,

wearing long braids

what do you encounter on your lunch break?

  1. Great vivid snapshots! Lovely getting a glimpse into others’ quirky lives – beautifully written, Em!

    1. Thank you x

  2. I take my lunch early and spend it in the break room, preferably alone, to preserve my sanity. I try to spend it reading. Occasionally, another courthouse employee will happen to eat at the same time, and if they attempt to converse, I’ll close my book and be sociable. Rarely and to my extreme perturbation, a probationer or civilian will wander in and interrupt me. When that happens, I tell them it’s rude to interrupt me while I’m eating lunch and they can come back in 30 minutes.

    1. Love it, I need to adopt the same strategy!
