Poems

My mother

“My mom smiled at me. Her smile kind of hugged me.”

R.J. Palacio, Wonder

My mother:

She is pretty

She is oceans away

She loves me

Unconditionally with irregular conditions

My imperfections

She notes perfectly

But when the world ends

She will want me to begin

If I fell ill

She became the kindest

My body writhed in agony

She slept by my side

Worry flooded her mind

I slipped into unconscious bliss

She laid herself quietly

And soaked my pain

Mother’s day arrives

My stomach turns

Sickness engulfs

My body

Her absence

Tugs at my heartstrings

I yearn for her

Swaddling me in affection

Hugging my exhaustion

Without touching

I hold her in my head

And miles away

She holds me in her heart

So I was sick and slightly sad on mother’s day this year. But tell me, how was your mother’s day?
