how do you define yourself?

“Nothing of me is original. I am the combined effort of everyone I’ve ever known.”
Chuck Palahniuk, Invisible Monsters

how does one define oneself?

by what occupies their hours during the day?

by what country borders surround them?

by the pigments of their skin?

by the seeds that have sprouted into offsprings?

by what drives their heart beats?

by what ills their mind?

by what inflicts their thoughts?

where does definition of a species begin

that ends the percolation of its mind?

how do you define yourself?

  1. This is something I think about a lot, actually. I, perhaps foolishly, can’t help but wonder if there’s more to us than the categories we place and place ourselves in, that we use to justify our inane senses of superiority. Do we have some core identity that’s deeper than what we do for a living and what we look like, or are we just walking facades?

    1. Great questions, according to any spirituality we do, and I think that’s why us humans are drawn into any school of thought that will give us a direction in spirituality…

Perhaps at times I let someone else define me and I’ll kind of use that as a starting point to define myself. But it depends on the person..

    1. Maybe a close loved one would give new insights into ourselves, I like that.

  4. A thoroughly thought provocative post Em – how do we define ourselves when many cannot even simply define normal? Some say age defines us, but it defines us at a certain time in our lives, each life or year we live defines us differently to the previous ones, as we constantly evolve. So my theory is age is unable to define us – what we do with our lives – that is what defines us.

    1. Agreed, every decision and actions shape us along the way.

  5. Also… I think, as humans, we define ourselves by what we serve.

    1. hmm..what do you mean by what we “serve’? did you mean like a purpose or cause?

    1. It’s nice to know that my ramblings are actually missed! hah! thanks, x I am in a bit of a struggle with my mental health, but I promise I am working on it, holistically and very hard 🙂

  7. Thought-provoking post, Em. We define ourselves by our past, present and what we want for our future. We should not let judgment from others define who we are. Thank you for following BrewNSpew.

    1. Thank you for reading, I totally agree x

  8. I define myself as a husband, father, homeowner, son, reader, brother, nephew, neighbor, probation officer, writer, hiker, & blogger. Also as introspective, slow to speak, lazy, selfish, kind, compassionate, nonjudgmental, and impossible to offend. Finally, as variously definable from day to day.

    1. YES YES! Awesome!
